What is Double Cleansing?

Originating centuries ago in Asia, women were known to remove the thick layers of their face powders and paints with the use of cleansing oils, followed by a foaming cleanser. Today, this two-step cleansing routine remains the same, ensuring all traces of daily build-up are gone. By first purifying the face of makeup, pollution, dirt or even sunscreen, followed up by a deep wash with a gentle foaming cleanser, the skin is left completely clean and ready to absorb your preferred skin care products.

Garnier How to Double Cleanse

What is micellar water?

There are two major benefits to the double cleansing technique. The first being the use of micellar water to help remove the layer of makeup sitting on the skin and provide a more thorough clean to those who wear foundation. Whilst the second creates a clean canvas for skincare products that are applied afterward, allowing the active ingredients to be absorbed into the skin more effectively. This method makes your skin feel truly clean and can be incorporated easily into your daily routine.

Step 1:
The first step is to use an oil-based facial cleanser to get rid of makeup and excess oil buildup. Instead of an oil, you can also opt for micellar water, which is made up of water-soluble lipid molecules that will work to remove makeup and gently cleanse the skin. Each of these products work to break down the sebum on the skin and leave the natural hydrating oils behind.

Step 2:
Once the impurities have been removed, the next step involves the process of lathering cleanser on the face and rinsing off with water. This will allow you to get deeper into the pores, by massaging the cleanser into your skin in an upward motion and rinsing off outwards. This step works to brighten the complexion and revive the skin, leaving it ready to absorb serums, oils and moisturisers to finish off your routine.

Micellar Water and Double Cleansing

Compared to other cleansers, micellar water is known for its gentle nature on the skin and compatibility with most skin types. Containing no alcohol, micellar waters are comprised of micelles, which work to gently lift residue off the skin and break down debris without irritation. Whether it is used alone or not, micellar water is an ideal product to be integrated within the first step of double cleansing before following through with a foamy cleanser.

When applying, soak up one of our micellar reusable eco pads and wipe along your face without any harsh rubbing. Each of the microfiber pads can be washed up to 1000 times and remain a sustainable makeup removing option. To get the most effective results, we’ll run you through which types of micellar water work best within a targeted skin routine.

Can your skin type affect the process?

For sensitive, dry or rosacea-prone skin, you can skip the use of a foaming cleanser and stick to a deep rinse to avoid drying the skin out. If the skin is oily or prone to mild acne, the two-step process will be highly beneficial in ensuring that excess oil is removed, without any harsh products being introduced. Oil based formulas that are incorporated into the routine will help to balance the amount of oil on the skin while cleansing, and also work for those who have shinier complexions.

When should you double cleanse?

Whether you’re wearing makeup regularly or not, cleansing at the end of day remains essential to removing any dirt, sweat or pollution that has been built up. If the impurities aren’t removed, it can contribute to a breakdown of collagen or oxidative damage to the skin.

Though, whilst your skin requires cleansing at least twice a day, a double cleanse isn’t always necessary. Any sort of over-washing can lead to dryness or sensitivity within the skin, so the ideal cleanser should avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils.
